Junk Collection IN DIVENIRE / Genova / 2008

Between March 14 and March 31 2008, Loggia dei Mercanti in Genoa hosts the art exhibition IN DIVENIRE (Junk Collection), staged by Marillina Fortuna. It features medium and large size sculptures, installations and works, Made entirely from scrap collected along sandy shores: fragments, plastic and oxidized metal objects, wooden pieces, ropes, polished glass, as put together naturally and ironically, to revive something dirty, accidentally swallowed up by the sea. My first encounter with sea rejects can only be described as a pure and childish love at first sight: I collected pieces of junk along the beach drawn to their material, colour and texture, just to, later pack them up in bags and fishing nets and abandon them in a crowded store-room. It wasn’t until later, as I rediscovered them, perhaps as a result of a singular find, they told me how to explore the sea, the way I do today, with all its force and landscape, as a place filled with passion and marvel for the inanimate brought back to shore. It wasn’t yesterday that the panorama of modern art was enriched with a new tendency- the reconfiguration of waste. Mind you: recycling of discarded goods and scrap material has been a recognized art form for quite some time now. Just take Pablo Picassos beautiful installation- now hanging at the museum of Mannheim- which presents a series of warriors assembled by pieces of metal found in the streets.
